Winter Street Scene

This was the scene in Maplewood, New Jersey, photographed during an early lull in the blizzard of 2010 that crippled the northeast coast in earlier this month. Later in the day and through the night, a nor’easter dumped an additional ten inches of snow on the area.

Mary Ann, 1967

I took this photo of Mary Ann in July, 1967, with an ordinary point-and-shoot camera. Her smile hooked me the very first time I saw her at DePaul University Evening Division in Chicago in November, 1966, and still does today.

Craggy Granite Promontory

I couldn’t resist snapping a picture of this beautiful sight in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. I was drawn to it by the sharp contrasts between the granite of this craggy promontory and the lichen that covered it.

Back Yard Scene, New Jersey Blizzard of 2010

This is how Meghan and Jeremy’s back yard looked on the morning of the Blizzard of February 10, 2010, photographed in color during an early lull in the storm. By the next morning, an additional ten inches had fallen.

Henry in the Tunnel

During the “Blizzard of 2010” in New Jersey, we were babysitting our beloved grandson, Henry, and couldn’t take him outside to play. This is one of his favorite indoor activities: crawling through this 5’ 7”-long, multi-colored nylon tunnel, pushing one of his favorite books ahead of him.

Retreat Chapel & Monaghan Hall

This is a serene scene at the White House Retreat Center, looking toward the chapel on the left and, beyond it, Monaghan Hall, which houses the dining room and the library. On warm, sunny days, retreatants often sit out on the Adirondack chairs or on Monaghan Hall’s patio benches facing the Mississippi River valley for scriptural or spiritual reading, prayer, meditation – and maybe a little sunning.

Winter Fog Enshrouds Lakeside Trees

A mid-January fog off Lake Aspen begins to cast an eerie shroud over the trees at Lionshead Beach.

Indoor Gardens at Opryland Hotel

This pond and fountain is the centerpiece of the magnificent indoor gardens in the atrium of the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. Whenever we pass through Nashville, going to or coming from points southeast of St. Louis, we are compelled to visit the hotel just to take in all this beauty.

Every morning, while we were staying in South Haven, Mary Ann and I would walk through the town’s public park with this beautiful view out toward the South Haven Harbor Light. One day I stopped walking just long enough to snap this picture.

Sunset above Charrette Creek

I took this shot recently as the sun set behind a stand of dormant trees on a ridge above the valley below Lake Aspen dam. Below the trees is Charrette Creek, barely noticeable beneath a cold winter’s snow. During the Spring snowmelt and the Spring and Fall rainy seasons, the Lake Aspen spillway sends the overflow of a number of Innsbrook’s interlinked lakes into this stream, which flows southward until it empties into the Missouri River at Washington, Missouri.

Times Square, NYC

I took this photo of Times Square on our walk from Penn Station to the Majestic Theater to enjoy a matinee performance of Phantom of the Opera. In spite of the 14° temperature and 0°wind chill last Saturday afternoon, the streets were as bustling as ever.

Navarro River Redwoods

On our way up to Mendocino from our lodging in Philo, California, we were fortunate to pass through the Navarro River Redwoods State Park, where I took this shot of this stand of redwoods along the road.
